Keeping schools safe during COVID-19

The pandemic is not a single event with a defined beginning and end. We continue to advocate for the resources and precautions necessary for our members and students to be in school safely.

The pandemic presents an ongoing threat to the physical and mental health of students, educators, and their families.

MAE members have weathered the storm of online teaching, of bringing their students back into the classroom, making up for lost learning time, and helping students navigate the emotional and mental health effects of the changes they have endured due to the virus.

We encourage our members to take every precaution available to them to stay healthy and avoid the virus, including vaccinations, mask wearing, hand-washing, deep classroom cleanings and proper distancing.

Additionally, MAE members continue to advocate for our schools to have updated ventilation systems and smaller class sizes to help prevent the spread of any virus or disease. No one knows when these precautions will no longer be necessary, and we will continue to be vigilant for the safety and health of educators, staff, and students in the school setting.

Educating Through Crisis

NEA has developed several resources to help public school employees get through the pandemic. Visit the Educating Through Crisis page for information on how to keep yourself and your students safe, and to learn how we are working to rebuild schools with an emphasis on equity, safety, and protection of our most vulnerable students.
