The event took place at Madison Central High School and was attended by Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann, Speaker Philip Gunn, and a group of legislators who had worked on the bill. Additionally, State Superintendent of Education Carrie Wright and Madison County Superintendent of Education Charlotte Seals were on program.
The bill signing culminated years of work by MAE members, Legislators, education advocates, parents, and public school communities.
MAE acknowledges the roles that each of these groups has played to resolve the issue of anemic salaries for Mississippi’s public school teachers. Without the teamwork of many people and groups, House Bill 530 would never have happened.
MAE members offer our deep gratitude and support of all the dedicated lawmakers who worked so diligently to show educators the respect they deserved by paying them according to their value to the state. Some of these individuals have been working years toward this goal.
It was most rewarding to see a bipartisan, ultimately congenial, effort culminate in this historic legislation.
We are committed to continuing our work to improve Mississippi’s public schools in the coming months., and we will be advocating for issues such as community schools, mental health services for teachers and students, and appropriate wages for education support personnel.
We look forward to working with all legislators, educators, advocates, and communities to achieve these goals. We will continue our work as Mississippi’s Powerful Voice for Education.
